Ladder Server Errors + Tournament Matches page 1

Two things have been observed by me and a few others tonight:


1) If you call a vote to start tournament and it passes, you can call "start tournament" again and put it to the vote again, and again, and again. Not sure if this has an adverse effect on the matches.

2) If there is a tie it appears one team loses and the other team has no change. I didn't check it up myself but the other players noticed this.

1) Repeated actions of startTournament have no effect on the match outcome being recorded.

2) We haven't coded in anything for when teams tie. I am not sure what happens when this occurs but it probably does something screwy. I would have to look at what the server log says for the end of game result. However, don't worry about this right now as we are working on a new rating system and once we are done with it, including code for when a match ties, we will pump all the games that have been played since day 1 through the new system and everything should be corrected.

We're thinking about creating some new Altitude "box art" for advertisement on gaming sites and display on the Steam store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/41300/

Please check out the rough concepts attached. Which design do you like more? Which look (plane flying into camera versus looking over shoulder of plane) do you think would best pique the curiosity of new players?

The first. It's a bit hard to tell what the second one is, though you can certainly figure it out. Still, images are powerful, and you want the one that immediately grabs people. Nice artwork btw!

I like #1 better, it'll read better on the small version I think.

another option would be to just replace the chick with a more appealing character. like maybe a crazed old man aviatar who's basically perched up on his feet, cackling madly with his hands on the controls. picturing something that basically looks like peter chung (aeon flux, phantom 2040) drew it.

Hmm, it's a bit of a toss up. The first one is pretty obvious and powerful but the second one is slightly more clever and intense. For marketing purposes though the first one is probably best as it's immediately identifiable with the game: full image of the plane, iconic ruined city backdrop from main menu, clear dogfighting going on.

From a purely aesthetic point of view I prefer the second though. But it's a functional piece so go for 1.

edit: It struck me that the two images could be used together as a front/back combo. The second image being the over-the-shoulder view from the attacking plane in the first image. Just an idea.

Agree that the first one's much better, it's far easier to identify what's going on and associate it with the game.

I'd try to sketch something up, but it would end up looking more like a box than box art so I probably shouldn't even try.

But, what about the girl though?
You should add more images of her and have her as a mascot in-game, perhaps as a training instructor and some form of announcer on the main menu, this game could use some more characters, at the moment it's rather anonymous, images of pilots and such can bring it to life and people will more easily relate to it.

Not like it needs to be said again at this point, but I agree, picture one is better. Picture two has far too much depth for a small image, especially considering that the bulk of the action is occurring in the distant background.

That said, kind of playing off of what sinstar said, I don't think it would be a bad idea to at least throw in one or two different planes, or at least some weaponry symbolizing them. For instance, where the crazy slashthrough half moon is, you could have a bomber dropping a couple of bombs somewhere in the middle ground of the image. Additionally, instead of just bullets whizzing around, maybe you could include a loopy rocket or two and maybe even a Miranda trickster shot (a laser would probably be too much of a visual distraction to exist in the middleground or background, but the internet loves lasers. Maybe a laser digging into the wing of the bip?). Finally, you could draw a mine floating near the bottom right of the image in the middle or background.

In my mind, this would illustrate that there are more playable planes than just the biplane (the bomber in this case) and would further show the different kinds of munitions which further illustrate the use of other planes.

Imo, where the altitude advertisements have failed in the past is being too biplane-centric. The sad fact is that there are a lot of side-scrolling biplane flash games in the world, and most of them suck. Many gamers have tried a couple in the past, typically leaving the game unsatisfied. When I see these advertisements, I think biplane, I don't think altitude. In marketing, the breadth of the experience will get people intrigued (options of planes, play modes, etc), not the depth (how crazy good you could become with the biplane some day). It might be worth considering multiple images, with each image focusing on different planes. For advertisement purposes on a larger scale, if people see multiple ads featuring different planes, I think their interest would be piqued more than just seeing one biplane ad over and over. Again, this is just my opinion, but I think it makes some solid sense.

second one. it shows you more the action in a game. it shows you what happens. it shows you the gameplay of the biplane since these shots have to hit good.

Going to agree that the first one; I think the use of the lost city parallax makes the background look much less bland. Overall the detail seems to be at a better point - I feel like there isn't enough detailed shading in the second.

I can't quite place it but the concept of a biplane picking off a target and flying away with pursuers hot on his trail is just much more compelling than approaching a target guns blazing. Probably the same desire that makes people love pursuits in movies so much.

EDIT: A second look reveals that the plane dying in the background is actually a blue plane as well. I feel like "blue plane kills enemy plane in a strafing run and flies away with a bunch of pissed off enemy planes on his tail" is a more compelling situation, personally.

Gotta go with the second one, simply because dogfighting in a narrow canyon at top speed is like one of the coolest things I can imagine. Looking over the shoulder of the plane also gives it a more personalized feel, which I appreciate a lot more simply because it's easier to identify with.

Well, we probably shouldn't jduge them on their level of detail since a real artist is going to go in and make it so either is very well executed technically

I guess I was under the impression that was one of the differences we were going for - detailed and chaotic versus smooth and simple. If the second image requires significantly more refining/detail by an artist to be presentable it might not be terribly fair to judge from these two images. If we're judging the concepts alone, I'm still all in favor of the first.

Nah, I disagree, the randa looks to sci-fi..
People won't know what to expect when it comes to gameplay.

For the people interested in aviation the biplane, loopy or bomber would be the most appealing ones.
And there's nothing that says 'Dogfight' better than a biplane in action, because people can relate to it.

I agree with you why don't you have all the planes lined up side by side and the view would look like your looking from the sideline but do it so you can see all the planes and then make all the planes shoot one shot but im no artist and i love the 1st pic btw and the second one but i prefer the 1st one:):):) and thats lost city isnt it ?:)

You can always join those 2! Main problem, is the exact angle choice of the one closer to the viewer - takes too much room. Maybe inside cockpit, showing the panels...

`Yeah, also from a purely marketing perspective, a miranda seems to catch the attention a lot more, of course first off a biplane looks awesome and actually my preferred from a retro into modern bespoke sense. Miranda is just cool, and people see an alien plane warping over a baron runescape, they get excited. At least i do, lawl.

Nice concept art. I think image no. 1 wins. Focus is on the foreground plane with plenty of (tumbling?) bullets. Consider the large bright sun in the top left carefully, as too much yellow will pull the viewers eye away from the blue of the plane quite easily. Maybe occlude it behind a building slightly letting you do overglow and HDR effects? :D

Sure some more characters but get rid of the girl. She completely throws people of, they don't know what to expect. but yeah the 1st on.

Some of you may have seen the Altitude Ladder already and some you have may not. If you weren't aware we have 1000 Community Points to give away as prizes and a lot of you have been wondering how you can get your hands on those very Community Points Prizes. I can't blame you, with the world economy failing around us it is no wonder that Community Points became the new Gold Standard. Pretty soon you will start seeing websites like Cash4CommunityPoints replacing Cash4Gold. But I digress.

As for the Community Points, the categories and prize values have been determined. The first group of points are going to go to ladder participants. They will break down as follows:

1st Place: 150 Points
2nd Place: 100 Points
3rd Place: 50 Points

Most Games Played: 100 Points

The season will end March 15th at 8PM EST. All ranks and point determination will be made at that time and date.

So some of you might be saying that you don't think you can become ranked in the top three of the ladder and maybe you don't want to get involved in the madness of trying to get the most games played. Well don't worry, the majority of Community Points are going to be prizes for our other contest.

The contest is simple. We are looking for something Community related in order to get the word of Altitude and the Altitude Ladder out to the masses. In all likelihood this is going to be a video of some kind with intense action, fast cuts, and explosive text. However, if you think that there is something else you could do that would blow our minds then by all means feel free to submit something else. The rules are simple, if you submit a video it should be posted on Youtube with the name "Altitude Game: Competitive Ladder" Ideally the videos should be somewhere in the range of 1 minute long. If you make or do something else and want it to be considered for the contest then feel free to submit it. At the end of the contest we will have a vote for the best entries. Please email all entries with your in game name, VaporID and a link to your entry to altitudeladder@gmail.com. This contest will also end on March 15th and 8PM EST.

1st Prize: 300 Community Points

iMovie is really Good. I don't think Camtasia For Mac (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasiamac/) is watermarked either. iMovie is default on most Mac Systems, especially if you have iLife.



If that doesn't work, PM me and we can talk more. Don't want this thread to become about finding software.

Correction: iMovie is bad. Also, it doesn't do screencasts as far as I know (though I really am not the one to talk about it as I stopped using it altogether after Apple ruined the suite's effectiveness with the versions following iMovie HD '06).

I'd love to create an entry or two for this contest, as soon as I find a cheap screen recorder for Mac that suits my purposes. Then I'll fire up my makeshift editing studio and get to work!

Edit: Is there a preferred frame-size or aspect ratio for the entries? 720x480 or 1280x720 (HD) are both possibilities for the video I'm planning to make.

I am trying to see if I can get a certain member of the community to put together a downloadable "video pack" of like 10 or so video clips that could be used by people. I will keep you updated if this will become available.

Just an update to this thread. I don't know if anyone is working on any videos for the fabulous community points prizes, but we have chosen to extend the first ladder season. The final date is not set it stone, but I will announce it once we know and will most likely be sometime in the beginning to mid april. As a result, the final submission date for the video entries has been extended! Keep working hard and show us what ya got!

Yah I used iMovie, it's all I have for video editing as I don't make videos. That was actually my first attempt at making a video. Maybe if I were more serious about making videos then I would get a better program that would allow me to do more things.

No one plays ladder anymore because they're all busy in the pubs xp whoring, trying to rank up and unlock their favorite perks. Now, if this system (http://altitudegame.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3072) is implemented, then I'm sure people will go back to ladder since then they can play their favorite plane/perk set up and still rank up at the same time.

And yes, I have no problem in shamelessly promoting my idea =P

This is the first real project I've edited in After Effects as part of a motion graphics course I'm taking, so I apologize for the rough edges. Don't know if anyone else submitted anything, but just because the contest is over doesn't mean it's too late to whip something up! The more videos and publicity we get out for this game and ladder, the better.

Anyway, we'd appreciate any feedback anyone would care to give. Special thanks go to Kevin MacLeod for providing the awesome royaltee-free music.

The font was called "Cracked," and was one of the few that I thought looked good with the rest of the video. Not sure if it was installed as part of the Mac OS or came as part of the package on the After Effects disc, though.

@Ajuk: "Achilles" was indeed the music that we used for the project. Kudos to Kevin for some great work!

so i used to play FFXI (Final Fantasy XI) (alot)
and in that game the way people teamed up were called "linkshells".
This happens when someone decides to make a linkshell, they give it a name and decides on a color of the pearl. then they are allowed to let people join. basically the creator has a "pearl sack" which he/she can hand out "linkshell pearls" to those who he/she wants on their team! once obtained, they get a pearl icon next to the name and can add or remove as they please. the sack holder is allowed to hand out other "pearl sacks" to other teammates if they decided to distribute the leadership more as well.
each pearl also is named accordingly and once when you check up their name, you see the name of what linkshell they are in.
when they walk around however, you only see the special color of that pearl with their name next to it. this makes it easy to already recognize which linkshell he/she is in without having to look at the full name. it worked really well and was very simple to adapt to!

anyways it was a really great and simple system that i think would really work in altitude! :) if you have any other questions feel free to ask! :o
but yea, just an idea..maybe too extreme :( and i know you guys are busy so it doesnt really matter. just throwing it out there! :rolleyes:

It's working for me. Try this:
1) Open "My Games" on Steam
2) Right click Altitude
3) Select Properties
4) Click "Local Files" tab
5) Verify integrity of game cache...

Ah, it's because I had a server running while steam updated the game..

Closed the server and now it works, there wasn't even a new update so why is steam doing this? :P

Please email every file in the directory C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\altitude\log to support@nimblygames.com and I'll take a look.

Edit: that makes sense, simultaneous server/Steam updates would certainly cause issues. You may want to install another copy of Altitude from http://altitudegame.com/download.html and then run your server from that shortcut (the server will automatically update itself, and this way there's no chance of a Steam conflict).

Unfortunately Steam has a parallel update structure that we need to maintain for new Steam players.

No problem, I solved it by closing down the altitude server running and then did what you suggested and it worked..

Seems like it the steam updater couldn't access the 2 files that the server was using while updating and somehow that broke something..

Hey guys, I know admins tire of having to /vote start and /vote stop and all that jazz.

So i've found a somewhat simple solution while the better tehc guys work on cool stuff like ladders and all that jazz.

I'll be updating it to make it more useful as suggestions come in and a few ideas I have but this should help for starters.

Basically its a script with autohotkey (if you're a dota fan you may already have one)

1. Go here http://www.autohotkey.com/ and download the program.
2. Download the script I upload.
3. right click edit script to see I am not the hax0r
4. This is still Alpha/Beta (bugs yes)
5. Double click script, it is now running.

Now you have shortcuts to writecertain things
1 = /start tournament
2 = /stop tournament
3 = /changemap
4= /kick
5 = /change map lobby (replace this with the server you are modding's lobby name)
Ctrl Alt P = Suspend script (when you are playing so you don't accidentally type something).


Simple script which I think will be useful, enjoy!

Im having an issue that say i can't connect because of a firewall, thing is, I havent changed any settings in a jillion years, I have no firewall on my macbook, I have a wireless router, and I havent changed a setting on that in ages, and I've never had a problem before

Let me just explain something for all of you. {T} (tadow) is a club, not a clan. we never scrimage. The biggest thing that tadow does, in fact, is say TADOW when we bomb the base. And, only about half of us tadowers are swn's.

I tested this out a while ago when someone (i think you) had it up to download and I must say that you can make some sick shots on this. I made some shots that I didn't even think were possible. This is a great ball map and awesome graphics just makes it better to play. Good job:D

There's no back way out on purpose so people can't spawn and immediately go down to the goal and block. They have to take a nice graphics sightseeing road so they can furthermore appreciate the graphics.

Very, very nice map. Power-ups are well-spaced, gaps are good size for sneak attack and fancy flying, backward goals are interesting (not sure about those until I play it 6v6). All in all, fun to play and no real complaints.

The goal areas are insanely fun for some nice shots, but the middle area with the two cramped "rooms" in the bottom and middle are bad. Those tight passageways are bad, so they should be widened a lot. Also, the map seems to be a bit wide and high compared to the other maps. It would probably be better if it would have a slice removed from the middle so that it is less wide. (Don't touch the side areas as those seem quite fun atm)

The structure in the middle near the bottom needs to be altered. It's like a little room, and it does nothing but cause issues. :cool: If you widen the path on the top of it, I think it'd work out. So you have a clear way to get passes though and make a turn and such.

I've replaced the map on my servers with the new version. It seemed a lot better, but there's still a little room for improvement. Below is my veeery quick paint job with some ideas.

1. Made the spawn area a bit smaller to avoid those situations where the ball accidentally is shot there and results in a mess.

2. Made the gap to the spawn area a bit larger so that it doesn't result in being a camp place for explos and snipers where they prevent spawning players to get to the field.

3. Closed this room to avoid all kinds of ball related messes. Rooms with small entrances are always a bit bad.

4. Moved the edges a bit closer. This needs to be tested a bit to see how well bounce shots to the goal are possible, but it makes the goal area a bit more interesting, and less like the huge open area in ball_core for example.

5. Modified this part so that it doesn't stop the ball when it's shot along the bottom. Less stagnant play in the middle = good.

6. Opened this room up to make it less of a chaos and more of a valid play position for passing through.

7. Moved this slightly up to make the lower path less cramped. I'm not sure if this mod is a good one, needs to be tested.

I'm also not sure if the gap in the middle above #7 is wide enough, but it might be. Needs to be tested also. The most critical changes imo are 2. 3. 5. and 6. , and the changed 1. 4. and 7. are either not so important or I'm not so sure about them.

This was very fun to play 6v6. The only thing that players wanted was a possibility to shoot a bounce shot to the goal which is basically not possible atm due to the back wall being so far. You could either move the wall closer or create a new short wall in front of the goal.

I think this would probably make a good official map. I hope others post their comments here too.

Hmm, preferrably it would be something that would allow shooting from both passages from below. In that version it looks like the right side passage can't be used for shots at all, while the wall is too far for those shooting from the left side, as the bounce is so long enemies have lots of time to block it. I'm not sure what would be a working solution though, so I'll give it some thought and do some drafts in paint/photoshop later today.

I tried this map last week on one of ARRs public servers. I like it a lot, this map not only plays well as it brings back one thing I missed since the inverted goals where removed from labyrinth. The goals facing backwards make it a little harder to score and can move the fight closer to the goals and away from the middle, wich is nice for diversity. ;)

Hopefully this will be the last one. I moved the goal closer and added a extended wall which still allows for shots from below but also makes it easier if you come from directly below the goal, and it even allows for a new way of passing from the bottom section because of the angle.

This map can still be played on {arr} servers #1, #2 and #3. It is not in the rotation though so you need to do a vote to change to it. I hope people will test this out and give feedback in this topic.

Hmm, this map still feels a bit large and the goal area quite empty. I can't really decide what it is that makes me feel a bit weird when playing it, so I'll have to play more to see if I can figure it out.


Edit: There are also some small points at least in the bottom where the floor isn't actually entirely smooth, resulting in super weird ball bounces. These should be fixed.

Surprised by some of these lists. My list seems to be quite different and is in alphabetical order. Note - there are many excellent players out there that I respect and love playing with. However, these particular people make me cringe when I'm on the other team (I've mostly excluded my team since I'm rarely on the other side - except for mat who always seems to be on the other team).

I'd be very afraid if I were walking in the woods and came across a bear.

Pro altitude players? Not so much. A good opportunity to learn and see what people better than me do, but fear doesn't come into it.

I personally fear the walls more than any player I can think of. If I see a wall coming fast toward me, I am often so scared that my hands freeze up and I crash straight into it.

Quite a nuisance really.

I lol'd at that. It's true though. Sometimes I just crash into walls without even realizing it. I also fear: Mobs of double-fire loopys. Especially if even one knows how to EMP.
