I can quickly explain this: my internet provider (fastweb Italy) is a huge IP, where all the users are logged to, so, any other Fastweb user can join my server, cause it's like if myself from the same computer is doing it (an only IP means everybody's detected as the same).
Other players can't join the server cause of firewall; Firewall stops other users (and so other IPs) to SEND infos to you, but the firewall doesn't stop other same IP users (as it thinks the same IP=YOU). Here's why you and other users with the same connection providr are able to join it, and some others not.

You obv need a router, like an airport station or a standard internet router, wifi routers work too, and then follow the instructions which you can get in the link above, I dont know who posted it, somebody did, otherwise u'll find it when you launch a server and something goes wrong.

You don't need a router to run a server. If you don't have a router, the problem is not forwarding ports, unless you have a software firewall. If you're running on Windows, check to see if the firewall is enabled on your network connection in the control panel. If it is, try disabling it for a bit and running the server. If people can join, then thats your problem, so re-enable it and add an Exception for the serverlauncher.

If thats not the issue, your ISP may have some sort of transparent proxy that is causing problems. There are some utilities out there to check if thats happening, you should be able to google them up.
