I mention this in the 'ball' thread, but it really deserves its own.
I think Altitude would benefit from having a minimap. It would display positions of all friendly planes as well as enemy planes currently visible to any teammate.
I know the counter-argument of skill in predicting where enemy planes will move being lost by this will be brought up but I really think it is invalid. This slim avenue of skill is easily compensated for by the vast number of new tactical options enabled for by having a minimap. Consider the fact that a minimap would open up the door for much more coordination - even on public servers - as well as entirely new strategies. I really think this would add a whole new dimension to Altitude play, deepening the experience.

Absolutely not.

Care to give your reasoning? Just outright disagreeing and shooting down spc's idea doesn't really help anyone.

All of the perks are plane bonuses, and it would seem very out of place to have something as a perk that is not a plane bonus, but something quite else. Also, having to choose between making your plane better or getting some other advantage doesn't seem like a good combination.
I'd definitely like to test the effects of an added minimap in the game. It might be good or bad, but most likely it would be good if done correctly. I assume that showing enemies in any case would be a bad idea, but showing all of your team mates and possibly the ball/bomb might work. Currently it's a bit irritating, especially when playing with random people on a random server, that you don't know if you are needed on defense or if you can continue harassing the opponents on their own area. This would most likely give better tactical play abilities for players, making play more interesting.

I can add my thoughts why this would be a bad idea...
It takes the fun out of the hunt if you know where everyone is..
Also ruins the surprise of flying into a huge blob suddenly, and also promotes blobbing of both teams since you'll be able to find your own more easily and see where the enemy is at.
WW1 and WW2 aerial combat was all about spotting and keeping track of your enemy.. An aspect that I like, compared to modern planes who ruins it with radar :P

These are all moot points if the enemy is not shown on the minimap. Any valid points on why your team mates and/or the map layout should not be visible in a minimap? Both basically allow for more tactical play even with random servers without organized teams and helps tactical play when not using voice communication such as Vent/TS.

I swear I saw a minimap on one of the ball servers when I had the ball. The walls were in white, and a translucent red box indicated the part of the map I could see with my screen.

That would be Ball_cube. Stack added a little radar type thing in ffa_cube but I forgot to delete it when I made it into a ball map.

I would like to try a minimap, see if it works.
In my opinion it would enhance teamplay and remove some of the luck factor, especially when bomb running.
A cool implementation would be like a radar, where you just see blips, and the blips are updated every second, or 2 seconds.

How did he do that? Some kind of parallax scrolling?
