Hello,
First I'd like to say that this game is truly awesome, and one of the best multiplayer games I ever played.. it's so addictive, and the game just feels right :)
I understand that the reason wide screen support is not included, is to let everyone have the same view on the battlefield. But, how much people this days are playing without wide screen?
I have a suggestion (wouldn't suprise me if it has been suggested before, but I couldn't find it with the search function):
Support wide screen, and give the people without the option to play how they play now (and thus missing a bit of the screen) or give them the option to play with 2 black bars on top and front (so they have the same field of view as wide screen users).
If you (developers) want to give everyone the same field of view, its coming down to either the ones with wide screen will have black bars, or the ones without. Why the ones with I wonder?
Sorry for my bad english, and sorry if this has been discussed before.
Greetings, Anhi a motivated new altitude player

He raises a good point.
If "giving everyone the same view" is the only argument against widescreen support, then why not let the ones without widescreen monitors have black bars (and therefore the same view of the battlefield)?

rofl lemme think i voted the wrong thing. but seriously when you want the screen to be full... the planes and everything will be stretched such as hd widescreen tv. i don't like it so alti is good as it is.

Because everyone needs to see the same amount of map, if one person has a big monitor (or TV) they would see more. Giving them an advantage.

I understand the need for the people who do own a wide screen monitor (which I am not) to use it to the best of its abilities every time they can.
But I'm totally against something that would lower the game quality for people who don't have that kind of monitor (I personally can't afford one. I have the same old monitor for years now).
Just a quick question here : is the game stretched or something in the current state in wide screen ?

tbh i'm not sure if I the screen of my laptop is considered as a widescreen - but in a fullscreen mode both right and left sides of the my screen are just black, so that the picture is square.
Anyway I play in a window mode, so I don't really care....

Have widescreen, play 1024X768, don't have the need for widescreen support and it would make things unfair.

Must ... Show off ... Widescreen! Seriously, though, I don't think that this makes much of a difference at all. I play in window mode anyways. I think that a large screen in altitude would actually be hindrance. Just too much info to take in.

I have a widescreen and I prefer the square view. I also usually play windowed.

Just want to clear up the stretching myth.
If Altitude went to Widescreen, the user would see more of the map horizontally, not just see the game stretched horizontally. Most computers/monitors being sold and bought today are using widescreen - mostly 16:9 ratio or something close to it, as is mine; so I see the game letterboxed with vertical black bars across the left and right sides. The game seems to be in 4:3 ratio, so if the game was developed in 16:9 and played on a 4:3 screen, the user would would see a letterboxed game with horizontal black bars across the top and bottom. The game would be scaled evenly to fit the screen rather than stretched.
I guess it's just a matter of whether or not more of the map should be made viewable while playing the game.
Cheers

Actually, I've always played in 4:3 and never noticed anything. The game does stretch, but never in a noticeable way. When it comes down to it, if you are really concerned about filling your screen, using a 4:3 resolution is a fine way to go.
That said, since most players do run 16:10, maybe that should be the default, and we could just compress for 4:3. I don't think a change is needed, but it should be evaluated in future releases.
More importantly though, and as a note to the devs, at high resolutions like 1920x1080, the font gets really sloppy, develops odd dashes in places, and aliases in very ugly ways. Maybe this is situation specific, but it might be worth looking into your fonts and making sure that they can exist cleanly in higher resolutions.

I really do not like that the game get pillarboxed.
I have a laptop with a 13.4" - 16:9 screen. Laptops of that size has become pretty common and can play the game without a problem.
My problem is that the pillarboxing makes me lose 25% of usable screen surface. This means that i end up playing the game on only about 10" of display real estate. This makes the game harder to enjoy. I do not think that i am alone with this problem either.

But when we go to widescreen how do we handle Marx's proletariate who take back the 4:3 by violent means?

Hi, I just bought the game a few days ago thanks to a great sale on Steam and I'm totally loving it.
Regarding the subject - I think the majority of screens nowadays have 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio. 4:3 is widely regarded as obsolete. According to the Steam Hardware Survey widescreen resolutions are in total around 70% of the screen resolutions. The poll here clearly supports that data.
It might be unfair for the 30% out there - yes. But if the resolution is nowadays adjusted by giving the majority of users vertical black bars why can't we go the other way round? Give those 4:3 users possibility to use horizontal black bars to widen their field of view and make this fair for them.

Thanks for the link, I totally forgot about it.
Anyway, you can clearly see that the single most popular aspect ratio (1280x1024) is not even the 4:3 one but a 5:3 one. You can also see that the widescreens are in a slow but constant increase and the 5:3 and 4:3 ones in a steady decrease.
Personally, I think that a wider field of view would add to the gameplay, especially to the team game modes.

Also something to note is that in Altitude the maps are wider than higher. I think this is one more valid reason for making wide the "standard view mode" in addition to the popularity.
(As a side note, I'd prefer to own a 4:3 screen myself, but those are hard/expensive to get nowadays, especially for laptops)

The major flaw of widescreen screens is limited verical view. They are great for movies or working on two text files simultaneously but not really god for web browsing - the resolution height is lower than those in standard 4:3 screen - unless, of course, the widescreen is large enough to have a better height resolution than the a standard 4:3 one. The laptops aren't that good in this department.
I don't think that widening the field of view would have that much negative inpact on gameplay if any. I've been thinking some more and in the teams games you already have an indicator where the ball and the bombs are. Widening the screen would add some possibility to plan attacks ahead instead of the battles being an overwhelming chaos like now. Now you depend more on reflexes and pure luck than on actual planning, tactics and skill.
In ffa you don't really hunt for people on the other side of the screen - cause if you do then the ones that are closer will hunt you down. On the other hand the wider screen can help with map navigation if nothing else.
