One thing I would appreciate would be the ability to send pm's to a user who's currently offline. Once they returned it would popup on their screen behind the global messages.
I can see spam being an issue so a offline message limit could be reasonable, say 5 or 10 messages. This would also serve to lighten the DB load. Once the recipient reads the message (or the sender decides to revoke the unread message) it could be removed from the table and free up space for more messages from the sender.

hmm definitely. and when u log in u have different chat windows for new messages for when u actually logged on, and the old messages with a (recieved when offline)and the persons name.
