Battle Language page 1

Battle Language is abbreviated teamtalk. The idea is to speak in abbreviations and codes, so as to spend the least time typing (<1 second) while communicating the most information.

Battle Language has two purposes:

1. To coordinate so the team works together effectively.
2. To communicate so each player knows the situation throughout the map.

Some battle language codes such as def, top, go and 2 have arisen naturally among a wide # of players, others in this glossary are suggested for adoption.

BATTLE LANGUAGE GLOSSARY

2: 2 bombs. Collect 2 bombs before advancing.
d (or def): defend. The base is in danger, return to defend it.
sh, ish: Someone get a shield / I have a shield.
nt: nice try.
mid: control middle spawnpoint, bomb is about to spawn.
p, push: push. Enough enemies are dead, move forward to bomb.
go: enemy base is completely clear, push fast.
t: top. Enemy bomb/ball coming across top.
sp: spawn. Bomb is spawned.
k pal: Kill Palin, she has too many bars.
cl, icl: go ahead and clear / I'll go ahead and clear. Mass kill enemies with one bomb so second bomb can follow up and hit base.

I've never heard of any of these apart from the blindingly obvious abbreviations like 'def'. Got any sources for your research Whalin'?

I was about to say that she said "suggested for adoption" or something along those lines but then saw the full sentence, so didn't end up giving you a lovely lecture =D

thats okay beagz ;)

But yes Sarah this is handy when used in an organised team that don't use much regular chat during matches.

Suggestions:
DON'T use f,d or s...commonly abused chat messages contain these accidentally. And yes they're abused. poor bastards

Oho, you're right, I didn't notice that.

Also, call it shorthand, battle language sounds kind of wierd.

I have seen people use 'sh' and 'cl'. People don't use these in pub servers where anyone is playing but on proleague or cappy's where 2/3 of the team is on your friendlist you can develop a common vocab. And of course the moar people use these the more common they will get :)

Is this stuff really used? or do you want it to be Palin?

Most of it is stuff Palin is proposing.

Honestly though, using shorthand for the purpose of clan matches seems kind of odd. If you understand the importance of communication enough to think about typing that much, you'd just be using Vent instead, so I guess the only place this stuff would have would be somewhere in between actual matches and pub games.

mm. I (still) think bindable quickchats would be more effective. Instead of typing '2' I could press a single key and automatically say 'The enemy has two bombs.'

There are a lot of the keys on the keyboard I don't need to use to play altitude, after all.

I'm sure you could set something like that up. If you really wanted it, that is.

Actually I tried and it doesn't work. This is because in order to set up these types of actions you have to use a separate program and therefore that program has to open up the chatbox, which then disables you from doing anything with your plane if even for a short period of time.

Hmm quick chat buttons would be an addition id like to see.

It would be nice to just be able to bind keys to say anything we want. In Quake, you could just use the console to bind and rebind keys fairly easily. You would just use things like:

/bind x "say Hello Everyone!"
/bind y "say_team Hello Teammates!"

And before anyone says it will become annoying because people will just spam things that they bind let me remind you that there is a mute function. In Quake, most everyone used it responsibly. If someone was annoying then you just muted them. I would like this kind of flexibility in Altitude.

Also, it would be nice to be able to change the color of the any of the text in game. It help for quickly identifying things that become common place. In other games i have seen them use a system of a ^# that prefaces a letter or word or sentence. The # (number) corresponds to various colors. It would also give the added bonus of being able to customize your name to various colors or combinations of colors.

Such as:

// Code | Color
//
// ^0 | Black
// ^1 | Red
// ^2 | Green
// ^3 | Yellow
// ^4 | Blue
// ^5 | Cyan
// ^6 | Magenta
// ^7 | White
// ^8 | Orange
// ^9 | Purple

Yeah, that was basically the system I got used to in Quake III: Arena. I've seen some games where you could bind quickchats to also play audio files that were included in the game (unnecessary, but pretty cool).

bongoooo bongooooo!

edit: Totally agree, hotkeys for team chat would be awesome i would say customizable but too many people would abuse it and spam constantly i think.

That's why you have the mute function and the kick function and the ban function.

One can already spam just as efficiently with regular chat.

very true, i guess i was looking at the worst case scenario.

One of the disadvantages of ^ is it requires a shift-key hold. "yt" would be a better keyswitch cuz then you could just mash "uyt1", uyt2 etc and it would say "Hello team." or "Defend."

I don't think anyone was suggesting using '^' for implementing macros like that, it was for coloring text.

I'd have to agree Maimer - I think that you have argued the implementation of this proposed function rather well.

The basic mute function easily satisfies ignoring the annoying players (even if they're only being temporarily annoying). However, if binding keys was to be implemented, another function I'd like to see is that there is a restriction of the time between successive hotkey strokes.

You wouldn't need to say.

[Team] [J.C]-MH- Vogez says: Go Low
[Team] [J.C]-MH- Vogez says: Go Low
[Team] [J.C]-MH- Vogez says: Go Low
[Team] [J.C]-MH- Vogez says: Go Low
[Team] [J.C]-MH- Vogez says: Go Low

repetitively, if you get my drift.

However, I think the downfall of the stroke timing ideas downfall is when a player binds the same quote to several keys, or a quote with similar sentences (i.e - "back to base", "come back to base", and "get back to base").
I can't imagine how annoying that would be, especially since I've put some very gameplay-orientated quotes in.
The real problem with that, is what are people going to bind to those keys if they're given the options? I remember in UT2004 you had 2 or 3 layers of menus that you could go through and select a quote (in this case text). This can be done in Altitude using a few simple quotes however.

this is coming off nesnl's idea for colored names. There is something called a hex code (at least i think that's what it is called)! Here's a link to a guide to the hex code!

I'll make a thread for this.
