I want you to look down at your keyboard real quick. See that area in the bottom right, just above the alt/control keys and next to the shift key? Thats an are that contains symbols commonly referred to as "punctuation". It has come to our attention that this area of your keyboard has received far less use than normal, so we would like you to start using it more so the keys down there don't feel left out. Also, use your caps lock/shift key less.

Anyway, Vi, nice song. Lots of double entendres though :O :P

Vi, i was bored, so i took the liberty of orchestrating your original Altitude Theme song, all fancy 'n sh*t. So far, its just the beginning couple of measures. Virtual orchestration is rather time consuming with all the various instruments and articulations... I may flesh it out a bit more eventually. Thought you might get a kick out of it.

Aww, thanks for the compliments, guys....

I looked into the company, called Somatone, that did the current new music in Altitude.
I suppose that from a "production" standpoint, it sounds good; all big & grand & 'professional.' And no disrepect to the composers of that music, but it sounds like a ton of other games, media clips, film trailers, etc... Honestly, check out their website. Most of their stuff sounds like video-game trailers we've all heard a thousand times.

The folks that do it are very skilled at crafting these types of songs, and obviously have a hell of a production crew behind them. But what was so neat abou VI's stuff is that it was creative, you know? sure, she may not have the fanciest recording set up, but being a semi-professional musician for the last 15 years, i've found that often when you have fewer tools at your disposal, it forces you to truly stretch your creative muscles, which is what Vi did.

Again, im not tryin to rip on the composers at Somatone at all. I just have a big appreciation for more home-grown stuff. And as is obvious by most of the comments here, all the old-time Altituders seem to feel that her original song corresponded with the unique niftiness of this game. Altitude isn't Halo or Assassin's Creed. It an an entirely different feel to it, which is why Vi's original Altitune seemed to fit better.

Anyhow, just my opinion. I'll try to flesh out the song a bit more tomorrow, unless Vi is offended by my re-creation of it.

Now then.... off to find some turrets....

That was totally unreal. I mean, it's kind of like the feeling I get when conducting a large group, hearing my music come alive, except without the experience being dulled down by hours of painstaking rehearsals.

TURRRETTTT! You do too have "mad" production skillz.

Have I mentioned how unreal this is?

Aight, so I'm gonna go ahead and post the midi (it seems to get a few things wrong when exported as midi, like some flutes turned into violins, and such): http://vihart.com/altitude/altitudetitlemusic.mid

And I'm also going to post the score, which was made for listening and not for reading so it's pretty messy and full of messy-looking tricks to get it to sound better (like alternating fff and f to simulate an accent), but is useful as reference for anyone who's playing with the midi: http://vihart.com/altitude/altitudetitlemusic.pdf

My vote is that we get this back in altitude.

glad you liked it, Vi. :D Thanks for the midi file too; i'll import it later tonight.

I had to listen to everything by ear to try to get the correct notes, and im sure i flubbed it on a few anyhow.

The orchestrations i use have TONS of different articulations; staccato, trills, tremelo, szforzato, legato, portamento.. it goes on and on. So it is a bit painstaking on my end, but i actually enjoy doing it. But thats why it took so long... Three hours just for those initial twenty seconds.

Anyhow, with your blessing i'll continue on and post any progress i make here in this thread. Yay!

Altitune! mp3 (http://www.box.net/shared/8s35vb2btr)

(the following is for music nerdz only)

Here are the changes I made from the score as written:

1. Added staccatos & accents to make the rhythms pop more
2. Backed violas with solo viola to add warmth
3. Panned the brass solos to center stage and added slurring & accents
4. Reinforced some of the woodwind orchestration
5. Added sus cymbal and harp
6. Added xylophone (very subtle, just to reinforce WW attack)
7. Added a little french horn tone to the trombone solo
8. Replaced sax solo with clarinet (with tiny bit of bass clarinet mixed in)

If you can get the full, looping score done of that and get it put up as a community points reward alongside skins I think you'll change the outlook of the musical world!

Kudos to Vi, Turret and Palin!!!

Holy ****! I never thought I would say this sentence, but: I love you, Sarah Palin!

I like the "subtle" xylophone. Good choices overall. Reminds me those brass solos need some recomposing... feel free to let your brass players "improvise" a bit ;]

One negative is that your clarinet sample doesn't have the bite to catch some of the grace notes. That solo was actually originally written for flute, but test listeners thought flutes were for pansies, so I would have changed it to something real manly like overdriven electric guitar, but I didn't have the tools to do that-- and hence it became sax. Point being I'm not real attached to the saxness of it, and clarinet is another good choice.

Have I mentioned holy ****?
Also, have I mentioned how insanely awesome this is?
Sarah Palin

Thanks for the feedback! Listening again a few hrs later I also hear some room for improvement.

1. Yes the brass solos do have some weird voice-leading (or crossing?) issues, I'll look at it.

2. Too fast. It worked for the original but with more realistic samples it needs to be slower, 110 maybe.

3. The clarinet solo may be better an octave up, or doubled with oboe, I'll mess around. I am also limited in my samples, to standard symphony instruments.

i am SO glad you mentioned this, because thats the one thing i didnt like about your score... not your execution of it, but just the fact that im not a big fan of saxomophones. Also my set up if for a more traditional orchestra set, of which saxes are sometimes not an element. I have a mean viola kit, which i'll plug it in and see how that sounds.. It's very expressive Or i can try an alto flute, english horn, or the brass ensemble.

And i hope you dont mind Vi, but i am going to have to take a few liberties with some of the instruments and notation, for the sake of trying to get it to come out as realistic as possible; my goal is not to exactly duplicate your score, but rather have your melodies truly come through. If theres anything u dont like, let me know and i will change it.

Good work, Sarah! Although we are working with different tools at our disposal, i like some of the things you did. The trumpet melody is much improved, and the addition of the Xylophones was great.

What program and samples are you using? I've got basically the Ferrari of VI's ("Virtual Instruments," that is :P ) Check out www.vsl.co.at if youre interested in

Gosh, Turret, take all the liberties you want! I had to do what I could with my tools, and you should feel free to take advantage of your tools, and add your own style, which is different from my style, and from SP's style and anyone else's style who wants to add to the wonder that is Altitunes =]

And being a violist myself, I can definitely get behind a viola solo. Not sure how it would work with the jazziness, but you'll find a way around that I'm sure.

Great job turret/Palin sounds pretty cool. My thoughts:

I'm sure you probably realize this, but everything needs a lot more attack and more variety of articulation to it. I'm guessing the software will limit you in this regard however. The synth brass... not much you can do about that. Also the clarinet (or sax? it sounds kind of weird) might be a bad choice for that solo at the end. Clarinets are just not loud enough to project over that much other stuff realistically and it just sounds too sustained and round. Maybe a trumpet or trombone would work better? (if you could find good sounds for them).

On second thought you could use the sax and just turn everything else down more, rather than pushing up the volume of the solo. Keep up the good work everyone, I'll see if I can get my roommate to work on this.

ZOMG Turret's version #2 rocks :D Well done dude!

Your brass articulations are really great and I LOVE the percussion you added.

The one change I would suggest is tun that reverb WAY down, it's so soupy it's covering up some of the 8th notes in the solos... it sounds like you're playing in the front of a church instead of a Hollywood studio. :p

For those who are comparing our versions, Turret is using much better samples. Vienna is real players recorded in a real symphony hall at 8 or 10 different articulations, probably piped through a sequencer like Logic with superb control.

I on the other hand am using Garritan Personal Orchestra piped through Kontakt which costs about 1/10 as much and is... not quite as realistic :D

I like Turret's realism but I'm gonna keep working on mine too, I think it strikes a balance between the funky MIDIness of Vi's original and the souped-up samples of the new theme. This recording was just a first pass and there are a few more things I can do to make it sound more real.

(MUSIC NERD DISCUSSION FOLLOWS)

As an aside Turret, if I could assemble a dream library (as if I could afford any of this ) VSL would not be in it at all even though it is the top of the shelf sampling library... I would go for EastWest Platinum, Stormdrum, Project SAM for brass, Symphobia for combinations, Hollywood Strings... EastWest again for choir... Ha, all that altogether probably costs as much as Vienna anyway...

Vienna accomplishes the first goal of sampling in that each individual sample sounds like a real instrument. The problem is the combinations. I've played in orchestras for 15 years and even the pro demos on their site, like Rite of Spring (listen here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB3njyDW8SY#t=4m13s)), do not sound like 90 instruments interacting in a real space. It sounds like someone recorded 90 people individually playing their parts and mixed them, which is of course what a sampling library does, but it's not the goal sound.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but EastWest seems to work much better. Here (http://www.box.net/shared/upjbiayghd) is a track someone put together using only EWQLSO Silver (seriously, Silver!) and Symphobia. This sounds a lot more like a typical John Williams studio orchestra track.

I enjoyed this little tidbit very much! Keep it up! What program are you using exactly? I looked through the forum, but didn't see anything about that.

EDIT: Now I'm going to have to write a jazz song about Altitude. Thanks for inspiring me, all of you guys!

You guys are putting me in a seriously good mood. Happy happy Vi.

I like Turret's realism but I'm gonna keep working on mine too...
:D
I'm ****in' excited to see what it'll sound like once you start digging your creative paws into it.

I'm glad you started taking more liberties with it, making it your own. I really enjoyed listening to that; I literally laughed with glee! Way to leave us on a cliffhanger-- I really really want to hear what happens next!

Keep up the good work everyone, I'll see if I can get my roommate to work on this.

Obviously I want to get in on the fun, and I have no production tools, so I might just have to do a piano or vocal arrangement.

Aight, so I whipped up a version on keyboard, check it out.

I'm not really a pianist so I cheated; that's a mix of like nine takes. It's pretty tricky to play.

I'd like to take this time to tell you guys that this is by far my favorite thread on the forums. So much beautiful work! It makes me sad I have absolutely no music skills whatsoever, besides being able to play a couple of songs on the guitar... :/

Keep up the great work! Every time I see a new link posted up here it makes me smile. :D

Awesome. I can't stop typing it secret messages and listening to what it plays back to me, some sort of stream-of-consciousness meditation with accompaniment. iT WORKS ESPECIALLY WELL WITH CAPSLOCK ON.

Now, to all you saying you have no music skills: I don't take that as an excuse! I don't care if you have to whistle it, or record yourself wailing a G chord on the guitar and shouting "ALTITUDE" over and over-- I want to hear some Altitunes! As an incentive, the next three people to post an altitune get 1 Vi-point*.

*Vi-points are not actually redeemable for anything. (Maybe you could sell it on eBay?)

Dang, I want a Vi point! Imma gonna whip something up on the piano right now! Though considering my recorded equip consists of a Macbook+Logic Pro, don't expect studio quality sound...

What I'd really like to do, is compress the multitudes of instruments and melodies and simplify it into a bass and treble clef. Then post the smaller score up here so others could then work with that and expand it.

Turret and Palin, AWESOME altitunes... Thats really cool, I love all the little nuances and trills... So cool

Thanks for resurrecting the thread! I've only been playing since 2011-ish, so I had no idea Vihart was in this game's community. I'm a huge fan of her Youtube videos, so that was really exciting. And the song is hilarious :D
