I am sorry, but the installer file seems to be corrupted.
If you downloaded that file please try it again. If you
transfer that file with ftp please make sure that you are
using binary mode.
I tried downloading it again using Firefox's download manager rather than DownThemAll, what I used the first time, but a bad download wasn't the problem; same thing happened.
Is there something I'm missing? Some undocumented dependency?

Never seen this one before... perhaps you just have an old gzip installed?
You could also try
wget http://installer.altitudegame.com/0.0.1/altitude.sh
chmod 777 altitude.sh
./altitude.sh
Altitude installer shouldn't need sudo privileges unless you're installing somewhere other than your home directory.
