This might sound like an incredibly stupid question, but I have looked everywhere and I honestly can't find the answer. Maybe that's just because I'm stupid, but I'd like to ask anyway. What is lag, what causes it, and what does it do?
Also, sorry if it's not okay to use a thread to ask a small question, but I couldn't find a thread for small questions either.

What the flying ********? Disregard the above post if you haven't already done so..
Ping is the measurement of the time it takes packets of information to travel between the player and the server, if you lag it means that your ping is high, which means that it takes a long time for packets to get to/from the server, which means you jump around on the screen, turn invisible, get shot behind walls etc. Lagging can also come from packet loss, which means packets of information get lost in the process which also cause you to teleport around the map etc. Oh yeah and it's caused by a terrible internet connection, long distance between you and server, or by being on wireless(unreliable).

I liked the explanation about a lag being a person who keeps crashing or dying with very little kills. Nothing like posting about something that you know nothing about. Go internets.
But seriously, everything that Eth wrote is correct. Disregard anything else. What Ajuk999 described was most likely a "noob" and he got confused about the word "noob" and "lag."

You should also know that there is lag and lag.
There's the guy who has 250 ping all the time, and the guy who usually has 50 but every few seconds jumps to 250 or even more, and comes back to 50.
The effects for the first one aren't thaaat bad : you may sometimes get shot when you just hide behind a corner because on that person's screen, you arent hidden yet and he actually hits you on his screen. Except that, he's not teleporting around the map or anything. He just flies 250ms after everyone else. This is relatively annoying but not as much as the other guy.
The other guy sees the same stuff as you at the same time, but because of his bad internet connection, or interferences, the server can't have a smooth connection to that guy, and what eth explained in his post happens : packet loss and stuff.
What happens in game is that the person is teleporting on your and everyone else's (except himself's) screen. It becomes harder to hit him and you have to fly fearing him suddenly appear next to you. This form of lag is as you can imagine, extremely annoying.

it takes skill to play with lag as well.. if u belong to the first category of lag as described by tyr..
u have to bear in mind that u are 250ms slower than everyone..
this means that on the lagger's screen, he may be at some place but on the other players' screen, he is not there yet..
so next time u wanna block a bomb and u're lagging, don't fly straight into the bomb.. instead, anticipate where the bomb will land and fly ahead of it..

When I played on some Australian servers a couple weeks ago after they got set up with the Steam release, it felt odd. Good, but odd.
Honestly, I don't even mind that those servers seem to have gone down lately. I'm just so used to playing with 200 ms that it doesn't phase me at all.

I get an average of about 100 (90-110, depends on the server) ping or so when I play.
Other people are getting the same, lower, I've played against a guy who had 600 ping.
But, they were flying just fine, and I was the one getting lagowned around corners.
Lag owned meaning I can SEE the randa laser MISS- but I still die.
Erm. Excuse me.
He has 200 ping, I have 100....Im definitly around the corner...
*rage*

It doesn't matter what you see, it doesn't matter what he sees. It matters what the server sees.
